The MLS approved champion list was intended to cover ALL bases, such that there is something for everyone. There will be at least ONE champ on the list that you at least somewhat enjoy, I promise!
Now before we get into the details here, we must remember that there is NO such thing as ‘the perfect’ champion. Every champion has distinct strengths and weaknesses, when picking a champ we need to be WELL aware of what these are before we truly commit. Lucky for you, this information is found within the champion guides on the site.
Step 1) Familiarize yourself with each champion if you are unsure about what they do/what their identities are. Go into practice tool, play a normal game, watch a YT video/skim through the beginning of the MLS guide, these are all viable methods of familiarizing yourself.
NOTE: Do not rush, this is a fun/important part of the journey. Even if it takes you a week or two to settle on a champion, that is NO BIG DEAL!
Step 2) Get up the list of champs and cross off every champ that is a 100% NO.
Most people are naturally drawn to a specific ‘style’. For example, when I first started playing League I knew I HATED ‘fighters’ and ‘melees’. I wanted to play a mage. So straight off the bat I was able to cross off many many champs. I then went ahead and played around with all the mages to see which one I enjoyed thematically.
Step 3) With the remaining list of champs, write down the difficulty of the champ next to it (this is found inside the #resources channel on the discord).
THEN cross out the ones that might be too complex for you (this may not apply to everyone). But if you are a TB, chances are you want to stick to the more simpler champions.
Some people just naturally prefer ‘simpler’ champions in order to streamline the process.
NOTE: Everyone is unique in how they want to value ‘Fun’ vs. ‘Difficulty’. Some people are motivated by climbing AS FAST as possible, others NEED to really enjoy the champ ‘feel wise’ and are well aware that their journey will be slower. There is no wrong answer here. As long as you are aware of the consequences.
Step 4) With the remaining list, play a bunch of games with each one/watch the first lesson or two of the corresponding champ guide to gauge your level of enjoyment with each champ.
NOTE : People ask all of the time “Curtis, how do I know if I ‘like’ a champ or not?”. The reality guys is that you need to go with your gut! It’s like asking someone “Why do you like the colour blue?”. You might just like it because YOU like it?! Don’t overthink it.
Step 5) This should narrow down the list to a point where you can make a solid choice. IF you are still unsure, watch further into the champ guides, do some more introspection and feel free to reach out to me personally if you have any additional questions.
Step 6) Commit for at least 60 games! This step is extremely important. You NEED to lock yourself in for at least 60 games, RAIN HAIL OR SHINE.
REMEMBER: You aren’t stuck with them forever, this is just to get you started. You might realize 60 games deep that you want to move onto another champ, that is completely fine!
NOTE: It is NOT a waste of time if you play 60 games and move onto another champion, because everything you learn will carry onto other champions you play even if you play a completely different style.
Cheers,
Curtis
